SEMINAR ON REGULATION OF RELATIONS BETWEEN GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS AND MEDIA CONDUCTED

Today, 19 April, OSCE Media Freedom Representation and Baku Office conducted a seminar on the theme “Creation of effective relations between governmental organizations and media in the democratic society.”

Different aspects of relations between governmental organizations and media, national and international legislative issues, freedom of information, and problems on defamation were discussed in the seminar.
Baku OSCE Democratization Department Office Head Jacqueline Carpenter and Presidential Administration Socio-political Department Representative Vugar Aliyev made opening speeches in the conference.
OSCE Media Freedom Representation Chief Advisor Alexander Boldirev said that work has been carried out to improve access to information from governmental organizations in Azerbaijan, and this will be continued. He emphasized that the main aim of the seminar is to conduct exchange of views, to discuss existing problems and solve these problems together.
Heads and employees of Press Services of different governmental organizations gave information regarding their relations with press. Editors and journalists spoke about problems they faced. After the opening speeches, discussions were held on the solution of these issues.
During the seminar Media Rights Institute Director Rashid Hajili and IREX Azerbaijan Representative Alasger Mammadli gave information regarding basic items of the Law “On Obtaining Information,” and its practical application.
Although the experts emphasized that there have been certain improvements from year to year, they noted that a lot of problems remained in renewing the creation of internet resources, responding to information inquiries, and that the court trials related to obtaining information continue.
The seminar has been planned to continue for 2 days and discussions will continue tomorrow.
