MUSHFIG HUSEYNOV VISITED BY RELATIVES

On Saturday (9 August) imprisoned “Bizim Yol” Newspaper correspondent Mushfig Huseynov was visited in Prison #2 by his relative Sarvar Huseynov.

Huseynov’s other relative Javidan Huseynov told the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety that M. Huseynov continues to receive medical treatment. Mushfig is also still teaching prisoners English, according to Javidan.
“The number of the prisoners that are joining his English courses is increasing,” said J. Huseynov, noting that M. Huseynov does not have any complaints prison conditions or the attitude of prison employees towards him.
Recall that Mushfig Huseynov was convicted under Article 311.1 (receiving of a bribe) of the Criminal Code, and on 21 January 2008 was sentenced by Grave Crimes Court Judge Jamal Ramazanov to 6 years of imprisonment, followed by 2 year ban on his writing activity.  However, this sentence was reduced to 5 years through a decision adopted by Appellate Court Judge Sahibkhan Mirzayev on 4 April 2008. IRFS considers M. Huseynov a wrongfully imprisoned journalist who was entrapped by a high-ranking government official that was targeted by critical articles Huseynov was writing.
