Sumgayit Appeals Court heard the appeal filed by youth activist, Azerbaijan Popular Front Party member Jabbar Savalanli. Judge Latifa Mammadova presided over the hearing.
Jabbarli’s lawyer, his family, fellow party members, youth activists and others attended the hearing.
Lawyer Anar Gasimov filed a motion requesting a new court investigation for Savalanli’s case. The investigation will be attended by experts and case witnesses.
The Judge granted the motion and scheduled the next hearing for July 14.
Azerbaijan Popular Front Party member Jabbar Savalanli was arrested on February 5, 2011. Sumgayit City Court sentenced him to 2.5 years in jail on May 4, 2011.
He is being charged with drug possession, but it is widely thought that his arrest was politically motivated, linked to criticism of the government he posted on social networking sites.
