New Criminal Case Launched against Journalist

A new criminal case has been initiated against jailed azel.tv website editor-in-chief Afgan Sadigov, as reported by the journalist’s family.
The journalist will be sent to Jalilabad region from the prison and will be brought before the court.
Lawyer Elchin Sadigov believes that it is the continuation of a litigation started against the journalist on the basis of a libel lawsuit filed by the head of Jalilabad Regional Executive Power. The trial on this case kicked off in March of 2017, but was indefinitely postponed afterwards. “I will meet with the journalist on 15 January to learn what the new accusation is,” the lawyer said.
Azel.tv website founder-editor Afgan Sadigov was detained on 22 November 2016. He was accused of beating a woman in the building of the executive power. Sadigov assessed this as a set-up.
On 12 January 2017, he was convicted under Article 127.2.3 (deliberate infliction of a less serious damage to health with hooligan intentions) of the Criminal Code.
However, on 7 November 2017, the Supreme Court re-qualified the charge to Article 127.1 (infliction of a less serious damage to health that does not pose a threat to life) of the Criminal Code, and reduced the prison sentence to one year and a half.
