NEWSPAPER EMPLOYEE GIVES TESTIMONY TO POLICE

A “Yeni Musavat” Newspaper employee who writes under the pseudonym “Orkhan” was called to the Absheron Police Department yesterday.

Chief of the Head Department for the Fight Against Organized Crime Mirgafar Sayidov took a statement from the journalist, due to an appeal sent to the department. “Yeni Musavat” Newspaper Deputy Chief Editor Azer Aykhan told the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety that the journalist was mainly asked is he faces harassment in the Absheron District, where he lives. In response to this, the journalist known as “Orkhan” said that he faces pressure in connection with his work. Unknown people call the newspaper’s editorial office and threaten him, and also try to gather information about him. In response to this, the police department told the journalist that if he is being followed or faces other threats he should immediately contact the police department, and measures will be taken. 
Recall that on 28 February 2008 an article entitled “Facts about Fazil Mammedov are being gathered” was published in “Yeni Musavat” Newspaper. After this, the article’s author began to face pressure. Unknown people called the newspaper’s editorial office and sought the journalist’s contact information. In addition to this, on 4 March 2008 Azer Aykhan appealed to Minister of Interior Ramil Usubov and asked him to take relevant measures, because he felt the journalist and the staff of the editorial office were in danger.
