NOVRUZALI MAMMADOV’S CASSATION COMPLAINT REGARDING DESTRUCTION OF UNPUBLISHED COMPOSITIONS REJECTED

Today, 10 June, in Azerbaijan’s Supreme Court, under the chairmanship of Judge Gahraman Allahverdiyev, the cassation complaint of imprisoned "Tolishi Sado" (Voice of the Talysh) Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Novruzali Mammadov against the 6 February 2009 decision of the Baku Appellate Court was considered. The Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety was told this by Hilal Mammadov, Chairman of Defense Committee for N. Mammadov's Rights.

“This cassation complaint was filed in connection with the prohibition against discrimination, due to the destruction of Novruzali Mammadov’s unpublished scientific works from the memory of his personal computer by the National Security Ministry,” said Mammedov. The writings were in the Talysh language and/or about the persecuted Talysh minority, according to Mammedov, and that is why they were destroyed.
Mammedov said a complaint about this will now be sent to the European Court of Human Rights. This complaint is separate from another complaint related to the wrongful imprisonment of Novruzali Mammadov which has already been sent the ECtHR.
"Tolishi Sado" (Voice of the Talish) Newspaper Editor-in-Chief, National Academy of Sciences' Department Head Novruzali Mammadov was arrested by the National Security Ministry on 2 February 2007 and then was sentenced to ten year of imprisonment.  N. Mammadov was convicted under articles 274 (being a traitor) and 283 (inciting national, racial, and religious hatred).
