NOVRUZALI MAMMADOV`S WIFE APPEALS TO CHIEF PROSECUTOR

“Tolishi Sado” Newspaper Editor-in-chief Novruzali Mammadov`s wife Maryam Mammadova has appealed to Chief Prosecutor Zakir Garalov and Nizami District Prosecutor Mahir Muradov in connection with the investigation into his death. The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety received this information from Committee to Protect N.Mammadov’s Rights.

It is noted in the report that Deputy Prosecutor of the Nizami District met with Maryam Mammadova and listened to her complaint. Mammadova insistently demanded that people who are behind her husband’s tragic death should be found and chastised.
A certificate was given to N.Mammadov’s lawyer Ramiz Mammadov by the Nizami District Medical Examination Department that the editor-in-chief passed away as a result of ischemic infarction of the brain. R.Mammadov told IRFS that although he appealed to the department to receive examination results, the department gave him a certificate only.
To investigate the reason of Mammadov’s death, IRFS addressed an appeal to the Justice Ministry, Justice Ministry Penitentiary Services Central Hospital and Justice Ministry Penitentiary Services Prison #10.
On 17 August, “Tolishi Sado” Newspaper Editor-in-chief N.Mammadov died in the Justice Ministry’s Penitentiary Services Central Hospital. Mammadov was transferred to the Justice Ministry’s Penitentiary Services Central Hospital on 28 July 2009 after his health worsened. His relatives claim that he died as a result of negligence to provide him with treatment. An investigation into his death was launched in the Nizami District Prosecutor’s Office.
In 2007, during a closed hearing, N.Mammadov was sentenced to ten year imprisonment under article 274 (treason) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan Republic. However, N.Mammadov, who has Talysh nationality, did not consider himself guilty and claimed that his arrest was related to ethnic-political motives and freedom
