PACE CO-RAPPORTEUR CONCERNED ABOUT IRFS CHAIRMAN

In his speech tomorrow, Parliament Assembly of Council of Europe (PACE) Monitoring Committee co-rapporteur Andreas Herkel will pay special attention to the latest incident regarding the Chairman of the institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety Emin Huseynov.

Human Rights defender Arzu Abdullayeva, who met A.Herkel in Strasburg, told this to “MediaForum” news site. Arzu Abdullayeva met with Andreas Herkel yesterday (22 June). She stated that the co-rapporteur was concerned about E.Huseynov and the current situation of the imprisoned journalists. 

A.Abdullayeva also said that she brought up the issue of appointing a special rapporteur on political prisoners during her meeting with CE officials. According to Abdullayeva, the appointment of a special rapporteur on three countries – Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia- is expected during PACE’s summer session.

PACE’s summer session will take place from 23-27 June 2008.
