POLITICAL MOVEMENT LEADER REACHES TRUCE WITH OLKE NEWSPAPER

Today, 3 February, the Baku Appeals Court held a hearing on Olke newspaper's appeal against the Yasamal District Court decision on National Union Movement Head Lale Shovkat's lawsuit against the newspaper, Editor-in-chief Rafael Bejanov told the Institute for Reporters` Freedom and Safety today. Judge Jamila Safiyeva presided over the hearing.

Bejanov, the newspaper’s lawyer Azar Rasulov, and the plaintiff’s representative Avaz Temirkhan were in attendance.
The plaintiff’s representative Avaz Temirkhan said in the hearing that the newspaper published a retraction in its 3 February 2011 edition and therefore, they withdrew their lawsuit.
BACKGROUND

On 11-17 February Olke newspaper published an article entitled “Who is the agent with the nickname “Madam.” L.Shovket claimed that information about her not conforming to reality found its place in the article, and therefore, demanded that a refutation be published in the newspaper, and that they apologize and each pay 100 000 AZN in fines. It is noted in the lawsuit that the amount received from the defendants via court decision should be deposited into the account of special facility in Bilgah village for war and labor invalids. Yasamal District Court fulfilled a lawsuit filed against newspaper on 13 September, 2010 and issued decision to be fined 4000 AZN.

Weekly Olke newspaper began operating in February 2008.
