REPORTERS WITHOUT BORDERS CONCERNED ABOUT MUSHFIG HUSEYNOV’S SITUATION

International Press Freedom Organization Reporters Without Borders sent a letter to several foreign embassies in Azerbaijan regarding imprisoned journalist Mushfig Huseynov’s situation. It is written in the letter that Mushfig Huseynov’s health seriously deteriorated, and he was transferred to the Penitentiary Services’ Treatment Facility. However, his treatment has not had any effect up to this day.

The administration’s claims that Mushfig Huseynov is being properly treated do not seem trustworthy. Reporters Without Borders asked the diplomatic corps to take important measures and to raise this issue before the government. Azerbaijan’s legislation permits the early release of prisoners due to health deterioration, it is emphasized in the letter that Turan Information Agency received.
Mushfig Huseynov was convicted under Article 311.1 (receiving of a bribe) of the Criminal Code in July, 2007 and on 21 January 2008 was sentenced by Grave Crimes Court Judge Jamal Ramazanov to 6 years of imprisonment. However, this sentence was reduced to 5 years through a decision adopted by the Appellate Court. On 14 October M.Huseynov, who suffers from tuberculosis, was transferred from prison #2 to the Penitentiary Services Specialized Treatment Facility for Tuberculosis prisoners.
