REPRESENTATIVE OF INVESTIGATIVE DETENTION CENTER #1 INTRODUCES PICTURES OF CELLS TO COURT

Yesterday, 2 March, in the Sabail District Court, under the chairmanship of Judge Elnur Hasanov, a hearing was held on the lawsuit of "Mukhalifat" Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Rovshan Kabirli and the newspaper's Department Editor Yashar Agazade against the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Justice's Penitentiary Services and Penitentiary Services' Investigative Detention Center #1 (Bayil Prison).

The representative and Deputy Chief of the Investigative Detention Center #1 Agammad Mammadov and the representative of the Penitentiary Services participated in the hearing. No one represented the Justice Ministry.
During the hearing held on 16 February 2009, R. Kabirli and Yashar Agazade put forth a motion asking the court to conduct a monitoring in the Detention Center #1, to study the number of people held there, to take pictures of detention cells and size and scheme of the cells. During today’s hearing the representative of the Investigative Detention Center #1 submitted the pictures of detention cells and size and scheme of the cells to the court. The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and safety was told this by Y.Agazade.
“During today’s hearing the representative of the Investigative Detention Center #1 submitted the pictures of detention cells and size and scheme of the cells to the court,” said Agazade. “He gave us the list of dates we were visited by our lawyers when we were imprisoned. There was a slight difference between the figures they provided and ours. During the last hearing we found out that there has been repair work and prisoners have been furnished with new bed sets.”
The next hearing on this case is now scheduled to take place on 10 March 2009.
Mukhalifat" Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Rovshan Kabirli and the newspaper's department editor Yashar Agazade have been held in the Investigative Detention Center #1 for five months in 2007 due to a lawsuit filed against them by J.Aliyev.
