ROUNDTABLE HELD REGARDING SITUATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN NAKHCHIVAN

Today, 13 May, in the press center of the Institute for Reporters Freedom and Safety, a roundtable was held regarding the situation of human rights in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

During the roundtable, journalists Elman Abbasov and Hakimeldostu Mehdiyev talked about widespread human rights violations in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
According to the journalists, people’s right to freedom of movement, assembly, property, information, and election rights are regularly and severely violated by the leadership of the Autonomous Republic. People with independent and opposition views in the region have difficulty living in the region. Independent journalists, and their families and relatives are prosecuted.   
Sahib Huseynov, who was unofficially deported from Nehram village of Ordubad region in 2005, spoke during the roundtable. Adding that he wants to put forth his candidacy for the elections to be held for Nakhchivan Supreme Assembly, S.Mammadov said that to do this he needs to return to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. “I was chased out of my house and I am not allowed to go back,” said Huseynov.   
At the end of the roundtable, E.Abbasov and H.Mehdiyev announced that they founded “Monitoring of Human Rights in the Regions” organization to increase their efforts to defend human rights in Nakhchivan.   
Leaders of NGOs and mass media, representatives of diplomatic corps and international organizations in Azerbaijan participated in the roundtable.
