Yesterday, 20 April, “Azadlig” Newspaper satiric/journalist Sakit Zahidov visited his brother, imprisoned “Azadlig” Newspaper Editor-in-chief Ganimat Zahid in Prison #17.
S. Zahidov told the Instituite for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety that Ganimat is suffering from rheumatism and pain in his eyes. Noting that the editor-in-chief does not have any complaints about prison conditions or the leadership of the prison, S. Zahidov stated that his brother continues to study English.
During the meeting Ganimat Zahid congratulated his brother Sakit on his release and suggested that he be careful.
Emphasizing that G. Zahid does not believe he will be freed through a pardon, S. Zahidov said that the political prisoners hope for the special rapporteur only.
“The administration does not have any way out and the appointment of a special rapporteur is kind of a sanction against Azerbaijan,” stated S. Zahidov.
Ganimat Zahid was convicted under articles 127.2.3 (hooliganism with intentional infliction of minor bodily harm) and 221 (hooliganism) of the Criminal Code and imprisoned for four years.
