SEYYARE HEYDEROVA DOES NOT BELIEVE VAGIF AKHUNDOV

November 17th, 2009
Today, 17 November, in the press center of the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety (IRFS), Seyyare Heyderova held a press conference related to the scandal that rose around the letter that she wanted to present to the president of the Azerbaijan Republic. S.Heyderova said that she received a letter from the Appeals Court and the procurator’s office of the republic on 16 November. It was stated in both of the letters that the letter S.Heyderova presented to president Ilham Aliyev in the Philharmonic Park was sent to the relevant organs.

However, S.Heyderova said that she had not gone to the event in the Philharmonic Park, but instead presented the letter to Special State Security Service’s chief Vagif Akhundov in his cabinet on 24 September, 2009. S.Heyderova doubted that her letter was presented to the president. She said that she called V.Akhundov’s secretary on 11 November and said that she intended to present the letter to the president personally.

“On that day I was detained by police and was taken to the Khatai District police department #37, and then to the Khatai District Court. Judge Leyla Talibova issued a decision to fine me 50 AZN without providing me with any explanation,” added Heydarova.

S.Heyderova noted that the Presidential Security Service employee came to the court and demanded for a promise that she wouldn’t write a letter to the president. “Then that employee brought me home. I don’t remember what I wrote at that time; they called an ambulance because I began to feel bad in the court, and they gave me an injection.”

Despite everything S.Heyderova said that she will meet with the president and complain to him regarding the events that have happened because of Vagif Akhundov’s suspicious actions.

Citizen Sayyara Heydarova was sentenced to 2 years 7 months and 15 days of corrective labor with one year conditional imprisonment (probation) under articles 221.1, 221.1 and 221.3 of the Criminal Code. The Appellate Court upheld the decision of the Surakhani District Court on 10 November.
