The family members of the murdered writer and journalist Rafig Tagi appealed to the president Ilham Aliyev on June 22.Tagi’s brother Ilgar Tagiyev informed the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety (IRFS) about this today (June 24). According to Ilgar Tagiyev, the appeal mentions that over two years since the journalist’s murder the investigative agency hasn’t taken any effective step to resolve the case.
“Even though as family members we submitted complaints and petitions many times, they all were useless, and even the courts refused to accept our complaints for proceedings. In our appeal we asked the president to order beginning the investigation of Rafig Tagi’s murder, to keep the investigation in attention and to receive the journalist’s family” – said the Rafig Tagi’s brother.
Background: Rafig Tagi was stabbed by an unknown assailant seven times on November 19, 2011, while returning home from work. He died in the Republican Clinical Hospital four days after the incident. Although the journalist himself and his colleagues assumed that the reason of the assassination was his article “Iran and the inevitability of globalization” that was critical of the Iranian government, the murderer and the masterminds are still not found. Additionally, Rafig Tagi was jailed for three years in 2007 for the article “Europe and Us” published in the newspaper “Senet”.
