Yesterday, March 29, Ayanda Mursaliyeva visited her husband, imprisoned “Azadlig” Newspaper Editor-in-chief Ganimat Zahid in Prison #17. The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by A.Mursaliyeva. According to Mursaliyeva, Ganimat’s health is normal and does not have any complaints about prison conditions or the attitude of the staff towards him, and he keeps reading in English.
Mursaliyeva added that Ganimat believes that the appointment of a special rapporteur by PACE on political prisoners in Azerbaijan will put an end to imprisonment of people under political motives and he evaluated this as an important matter.
G. Zahid expressed his position on the problem related to his brother Sakit Zahidov’s release whose name was included in the amnesty, “This is the government’s extraordinary attitude towards prisoners.”
Ganimat Zahid was convicted under articles 127.2.3 (hooliganism with intentional infliction of minor bodily harm) and 221 (hooliganism) of the Criminal Code and imprisoned for four years.
