Yesterday, 13 March, Rena Zahidova visited her husband, imprisoned “Azadlig” Newspaper satiric/journalist Sakit Zahidov in Prison #10.
The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by Rena Zahidova.
“Sakit’s condition is normal and does not have any problems with the leadership of prison #10,” said R. Zahidova. According to Rena Zahidova, the article according to which S. Zahidov was arrested is one that fall in the amnesty anticipated to issued for the upcoming Novruz holiday, and the journalist has only three months left in his prison term. They are waiting impatiently for Sakit’s release, and Sakit hopes that his poems will go on to be published in “Azadlig” Newspaper.
Sakit Zahidov was arrested on 23 June 2006 for possession of narcotics (this charge is widely understood to be spurious) and was sentenced to three years of imprisonment by the Grave Crimes Court. Only three months left till his prison term ends.
