Today, May 12, in the Baku Appellate Court, under the chairmanship of Judge Abid Abdinbeyov, a hearing was conducted on the complaint of “Azadlig” Newspaper Chief Editor Ganimat Zahid.
The hearing opened with a statement from State Prosecutor Gudret Nasirov. He said that the Yasamal District Court’s verdict against Zahid is fair, and asked the Judge Abdinbeyov to uphold the lower court’s decision. He said that during the medical examination a technical error occurred, and the date of Hasanov’s admission into the hospital was mixed-up with the date that he had X-rays.
After this, the judge announced a recess. The next hearing on this case has been scheduled for 13 May at 11 a.m.
Recall that the Appellate Court is considering a complaint against the Yasamal District Court’s decision to imprison Ganimat Zahid for four years, on the basis of allegations that Zahid committed hooliganism and inflicted minor bodily harm in an altercation outside “Azadlig” Newspaper’s editorial office. Zahid imprisoned has been widely condemned and is considered to be politically motivated.
