SUPREME COURT DOES NOT GRANT JOURNALISTS’ APPEAL

Yesterday, 15 March, the Supreme Court heard the appeal filed by journalists Elchin Hasanov, Afghan Mukhtarli and Natig Adilov against the Appeals Court decision on their lawsuit against Sabayel District Police Station #39. The appeal was not granted, Hasanov reported to IRFS.

BACKGROUND The journalists were subjected to physical harassment in front of the Sabail District Police Office Police Department #39 on 10 May, 2009. They were beaten by police in front of the Police Department #39 while they were gathering information regarding the detention of a group of youth who protested against “Flower Day” and the lack of officially declared mourning for those who died during an armed attack of the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy.  Journalists appealed to the court to rule the action of police unfounded. Journalists filed appeal against the decision issued in Sabail District Court on 2 April, 2010 that refused to fulfill the lawsuit.  The Appeals Court also upheld the decision.
