US MISSION TO OSCE CONCERNED REGARDING IMPRISONMENT OF JOURNALISTS

The US mission to OSCE released a statement regarding the human rights situation in Azerbaijan, according to the Mediaforum website.

Concern regarding the imprisonment of journalists and bloggers is noted in the statement. “The new criminal charge of possession of drugs against Eynulla Fatullayev and the timing of this new case prior to the decision of the European Court of Human Rights creates doubts,” the statement reads.
“We demand that Azerbaijan’s government solve this issue within the country’s laws and constitution and international norms,” it is said in the statement. “Securing freedom of expression for all citizens and media representatives is very essential for democracy. The candidates will not be able to deliver their messages to the people during parliamentarian elections if there’s no fair conditions for free media. As a result, the country’s contribution to the democratic development will remain in danger.”
In conclusion, it is demanded in the statement that Azerbaijan’s government solve the issue of imprisoned journalists and assist independent media.
“The release of media representatives arrested on trumped-up charges including Eynulla Fatullayev would be a successful step in this direction. We demand that Azerbaijan’s leadership secure a fair and transparent trial for the imprisoned youth bloggers in the Appellate Court.”
