YUKSELIS NAMINE REPORTER SUMMONED TO POLICE OFFICE AND THREATENED

Yukselis Namine  newspaper reporter and Azerbaijan Popular Front Party Youth Committee member Elchin Hasanov, was summoned to Sumgayit City Police Department today.

“Police Department Deputy Chief Azer Jahangirov spoke with me. He said that the reason he wanted to speak with me was my calling the youth to action after Jabbar Savalanli’s  arrest. The Police Chief said ‘you have already been warned. Don’t tell me next time that you have not been informed’. After that, they made me provide a retraction and apologize. I told them that I would do so when Savalanali is allowed  to meet with his mother and his student ID card is given to her,” said Hasanov.

In a phone conversation with an IRFS correspondent, Jahangirov confirmed that Hasanov had been invited to the police office. “He knows the issue, we discussed that issue. He was not warned in any way.”

To note, Elchin Hasanov had earlier stated that he had been persecuted by two persons in a VAZ 2107 automobile on January 21 evening while driving from Sumgayit to Baku.

Yukselis Namine has been published weekly, with breaks, since 2004 with support from NED.
