MUSHFIG HUSEYNOV COMPLAINS ABOUT HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDER

Yesterday, 15 April, imprisoned “Bizim Yol” Newspaper correspondent Mushfig Huseynov called his family. The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by M. Huseynov’s relative Javidan Huseynov.

During their phone conversation, J. Huseynov told the journalist about the appeal of Elchin Behbudov, the Chairman of the Azerbaijan Committee against Torture, to the president regarding imprisoned “Azadlig” Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Ganimat Zahid and imprisoned Gundalik Azerbayjan and Realny Azerbayjan Newpapers’ Editor-in-Chief Eynulla Fatullayev. Mushfig Huseynov was unhappy when he heard that his name was not included in the appeal and stated that he does not want his name to now be included in such an appeal because he will consider it a belated step.
M. Huseynov does not have any complaints about prison conditions and is getting treatment for the pain in his stomach, said J. Huseynov.
The Chairman of the Azerbaijan Committee against Torture Elchin Behbudov told IRFS that the appeal to President Ilham Aliyev was exclusively about editors-in-chief and therefore M. Huseynov’s name was not mentioned there.
“The previous appeal was about M. Huseynov’s illness,” said Behbudov. “I will visit M. Huseynov at the beginning of the next week and talk to him about this issue.”
Mushfig Huseynov was convicted under Article 311.1 (receiving of a bribe) of the Criminal Code and on 21 January 2008 was sentenced by Grave Crimes Court Judge Jamal Ramazanov to 6 years of imprisonment, followed by 2 year ban on his writing activity.  However, this sentence was reduced to 5 years through a decision adopted by Appellate Court Judge Sahibkhan Mirzayev on 4 April 2008.
