Supreme Court Commutes Political Party Activist Elvin Abdullayev’s Sentence

Summary: Hearing 1  At the hearing, Elvin Abdullayev’s lawyer Ali Mehtiyev made an oral argument on the appeal, and asked the court to pass a verdict of acquittal for the youth activist;  Public prosecutor Rasul Abbasov in turn said that Elvin Abdullayev was proved guilty based on video recordings and witness testimonies during the trial, and asked for dismissal of the appeal;  Judicial Chamber changed Baku Grave Crimes Court’s judgment

Health of arrested activist deteriorates

The health of Elvin Abdullayev, the arrested member of the Youth Committee of Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, has deteriorated, reported his relatives on December 11.   Apparently his doctor has said that he requires urgent surgery. Elvin was beaten when he was first detained, causing a hernia. There is a risk of serious complications unless he is operated upon. (more…)

  Youth activist sentenced to 6 years in jail; calls it “victory over dictator”   On June 1, Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (APFP) activist Elvin Abdullayev was sentenced to 6 years in prison by the Baku Grave Crimes Court.    Elvin Abdullayev stated in court that he does not accept the charges and believes them to be politically motivated.     “This is not my final word. Prosecutor requests a 7-year jail sentence for youth activist

 On May 25, the trial of Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (APFP) youth activist Elvin Abdullayev continued in the Baku Grave Crimes Court.   At today’s hearing, the prosecutor requested a 7-year prison sentence for Abdullayev. Abdullayev’s lawyer said that at the next hearing, he will demand an acquittal.     Elvin Abdullayev was arrested in January 2015, charged under article 234. (more…)
