The European Court of Human Rights has upheld the complaint brought against Azerbaijan by the chief editor of Azadliq newspaper, Ganimat Zahid, informs the Media Rights Institute, which was defending the editor’s case.
Zahid’s complaint was about unlawful pretrial detention and was maintained by the European Court. Note that back in 2007, Zahid was held in pretrial detention facility for 4 months until the court sentenced him to 4 years in jail.
The complaint submitted to the European Court was about violation of the editor’s right to liberty and security. Alongside with upholding Zahid’s case, the European Court requires the Azerbaijani government to pay 10,000 AZN compensation to the editor.
