Journalist Rauf Mirkadirov’s trial continues behind closed doors

The hearing on journalist Rauf Mirgadirov’s case was resumed in Baku Grave Crimes Court on December 9. The hearing was held behind closed doors in accordance with a prior court ruling.

After the hearing, the journalist’s lawyer, Fuad Agayev, told reporters that witness examinations had been completed, but the judicial investigation is still ongoing.

Reiterating his non-disclosure obligation, the lawyer said only that the witnesses had not testified against Rauf Mirgadirov.

He added that the defense has evidence to prove Mirgadirov’s innocence, which will be presented at the next hearing.

The hearing will continue on December 14.

Background: Journalist Rauf Mirgadirov was detained on April 19, 2014 after being deported to Baku from Turkey. He was charged with spying for Armenia (treason). Mirgadirov rejects the charges, deeming them “absurd”.
