ANOTHER LAWSUIT FILED AGAINST “GUNDALIK BAKI” NEWSPAPER

Another lawsuit has been filed against “Gundalik Baki” Newspaper. The newspaper’s founder and chief editor Habil Valiyev told this to the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety. He said, “Yesterday letter from the Press Council and Yasamal District Court came to our editorial office,” said Valiyev.

“In the Press Council’s letter it was stated that the leadership of School #21, which is located in the Yasamal district of Baku, has complained about us. And in the letter from the court, it was written that the court has received a lawsuit against us. In the lawsuit the plaintiff’s demand that the newspaper be closed, that the editorial pay 10,000 for moral damages, and that Ali Movlud, the author of the article, pay a 15,000 AZN fine.”

The lawsuit stems from the article entitled “5th grader raped,” which was published on 7 November 2008.

Throughout the day, IRFS tried to contact School #21 Director Ferrukh Aghasibeyli, however a secretary answering the phone consistently said that Aghasibeyli was in class.

The Press Council still has not reviewed the complaint against “Gundalik Baki.” Because the matter will be considered in court the council has decided not to review it.
