Chairman of the Media Rights Institute, lawyer Rashid Hajili told to the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety that a complaint was sent to the European Court of Human Rights about the decision adopted by the Yasamal District Court for "Azadlig" Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Ganimat Zahid to be kept in pretrial detention for two months.
According to Hajili, the district court and Appellate Court decisions are enough to send a complaint about pre-trial detention to the European Court of Human Rights.
Recall that, on 11 November 2007 Yasamal District Court Judge Tahir Ismayilov adopted a decision hold Zahid pre-trial detention for two months. On November 22 Rizvan Safarov, the Judge of Baku Appellate Court upheld this decision. Zahid is accused of hooliganism and inflicting bodily harm in an altercation outside of “Azerbayjan” Printing House, where “Azadlig” Newspaper’s office is located, how ever many human rights activists believe Zahid’s detention is politically motivated.
