EYNULLA FATULLAYEV REFUSES TO APPEAL TO PLENUM OF SUPREME COURT

Today, 23 July, Emin Fatullayev visited his son, imprisoned editor-in-chief of "Gundelik Azerbayjan" and "Realny Azerbayjan" newspapers Eynulla Fatullayev in Prison #12. Emin Fatullayev told the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety that Eynulla’s situation is normal and he does not have any complaints about prison conditions or his health. The editor-in-chief was concerned about socio-political events, according to father Fatullayev.

According to Emin Fatullayev, the journalist does not have any complaints about his health or prison conditions.  “Eynulla received a letter from the Supreme Court,” said fatullayev. “In the letter #3C78/09 signed on June 30    by Agayeva Rimma Ibrahim Gizi, the Supreme Court Department to oversee the reception of the citizens, the registration of appeals and their consideration Eynulla is requested to appeal to the Plenum of the Supreme Courtin connection with the criminl case. Eynulla rejected this offer because his case is in the process of concludng in the European Court of Human Rights.”

Gundelik Azerbaijan" and "Realny Azerbaijan" newspapers' editor-in-chieF Eynulla Fatullayev was sentenced to 2.5 years of imprisonment on 21 April 2007 for insulting honor and dignity.  Later he was convicted under articles 214.1 (threatening terror), 283.2.2 (incitement of ethnic/national, social or religious hatred abusing authority), and 213.2.2 (tax evasion) of the Criminal Code and was sentenced to 8.5 years of imprisonment on 30 October 2007.
