Human rights defender Intigam Aliyev starts his prison sentence

Human rights lawyer Intigam Aliyev, the Chairman of the Legal Education Society, was transferred from Baku Detention Facility to Prison #6 on July 28, reported his daughter Narmin Kamil.

After the Baku Court of Appeals upheld his sentence on July 21, Aliyev was transferred to Prison #6, in accordance with national legislation. NIDA member Rashad Hasanov is serving his sentence in the same prison.

Intigam Aliyev was arrested on 8 August 2014, and later sentenced to 7.5 years in prison by the Baku Grave Crimes Court on charges of tax evasion, illegal entrepreneurship, misappropriation, service forgery and abuse of official powers.

He rejects all the charges as politically motivated, and has been recognized as a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International.
