The Media Rights Institute has addressed an appeal to the president of the Azerbaijan Republic, high-ranking government officials, the Head of Azerbaijan’s Parliament and national deputies, and several non-governmental organizations.
“During the last three days four journalists have been sentenced for their news articles. Eight claims have been filed against journalists demanding for their arrest or payment of compensations in large amounts during the last three months. During the last nine months lawsuits have been filed against 24 journalists demanding for payments for moral damages in unbelievable amounts,” it is said in the appeal. The organization added the draft law proposal, “On protection of the influence” to the appeal hoping to prevent these miserable statistics.
The Media Rights Institute considers clear and exact regulation of the legislation to be necessary for the right and just solution of the issues regarding the protection of influence, and the protection of freedom of speech from unfounded intervention.
