October 9th, 2009
Imprisoned “Bizim yol” newspaper employee Mushfig Huseynov’s helath, who is being held in prison #2, has seriously deteriorated. The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by Mushfig Huseynov’s nephew Javidan Huseynov. According to J.Huseynov, M.Huseynov called him yesterday and said that although he has been receiving treatment for 2 weeks now, his temperature does not come down.

“There are no necessary medicines in the prison and we will buy the medicines and take to him,” added J.Huseynov. “Although his family suggested that Mushfig Huseynov be transferred to the treatment facility, the journalist said that the condition in the hospital is worse than in the prison.” J.Huseynov noted that Mushfig’s family wants that that the human rights defenders, especially Elcin Behbudov visit the journalist and be concerned about his health.
Mushfig Huseynov was convicted under Article 311.1 (receiving of a bribe) of the Criminal Code and on 21 January 2008 was sentenced by Grave Crimes Court Judge Jamal Ramazanov to 6 years of imprisonment, followed by 2 year ban on his writing activity. However, this sentence was reduced to 5 years through a decision adopted by Appellate Court Judge Sahibkhan Mirzayev on 4 April 2008.
