Opposition activist’s appeal denied

On June 1, the Baku Court of Appeal denied the petition of Musavat Party member reported Karimli’s lawyer Nemat Karimli.

Siraj Karimli, the brother of Musavat Party activist Faraj Karimli, was arrested on 17 July 2014 and charged under Article 234.4.3 (possession of a large quantity of drugs with intent to sell) of the Criminal Code.

On March 16, Baku Grave Crimes Court sentenced Siraj Karimli to 6 years in prison. Siraj Karimli’s brother, Musavat Party deputy chairman Faraj Karimli was arrested on the same charge on July 23. Their father, Ragif Karimli, was the chairman of the Musavat Party’s Lachin regional branch. Siraj Karimli and his family believe that his arrest is related to the activities of his father Ragif and his brother Faraj. Faraj was the administrator of the “Istefa” (Resign) group on Facebook, and managed the official Musavat party website (musavat.org). He is also the founder and administrator of the “Basta” Facebook group.
