On 18 April, Javidan Huseynov visited imprisoned “Bizim Yol” Newspaper correspondent Mushfig Huseynov in Prison #2. The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told by Javidan Huseynov that M.Huseynov does not have any complaints about his health or prison conditions.
According to Javidan Huseynov, M. Huseynov expressed discontent once again about the appeal of the Chairman of the Azerbaijan Committee against Torture Elchin Behbudov to President Ilham Aliyev and does not desire to meet human rights defender E. Behbudov from now on.
On 13 April, the Chairman of the Azerbaijan Committee against Torture Elchin Behbudov sent a thank you letter to President Ilham Aliyev.
He thanked the president for his efforts to free “Tezadlar” Newspaper editor-in-chief Asif Merzili and expressed hope that this would be continuous, other imprisoned journalists, especially Eynulla Fatullayev and Ganimat Zahid would be released.
Mushfig Huseynov was convicted under Article 311.1 (receiving of a bribe) of the Criminal Code and on 21 January 2008 was sentenced by Grave Crimes Court Judge Jamal Ramazanov to 6 years of imprisonment, followed by 2 year ban on his writing activity. However, this sentence was reduced to 5 years through a decision issued by Appellate Court Judge Sahibkhan Mirzayev on 4 April 2008.
