Imprisoned “Azadlig” Newspaper journalist/satiric Sakit Zahidov, also known by his penname Mirza Sakit, has officially started a hunger-strike.
The Penitentiary System’s Public Relations Department told this to the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety today. According to the department, it received word this afternoon that Zahidov has started a hunger-strike.
Recall that Sakit Zahidov has been in prison since 23 June 2006, and is serving a three-year prison sentence in Prison #14 for possession of a narcotic. Many people believe that Zahidov was framed, and deprived of a fair court trial because of his criticism of Azerbaijani government officials.
