Last week, 21 January, Rena Zahidova visited her husband, imprisoned “Azadlig” Newspaper satiric/journalist Sakit Zahidov in Prison #14. Rena Zahidova told this to the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety. “Sakit’s general condition is normal and he does not have any complaints about his health,” said Zahidova. “However, another provocation is being prepared against him in the prison. Danger subsides when information about this is written in the press.”
According to Rena Zahidova, Sakit Zahidov is trying to be vigilant regarding the anticipated provocation since he knows that the provocation is considered to prolong his prison term. An appeal about these alleged provocations has already been made relevant organs, said Zahidova.
Sakit Zahidov was arrested on 23 June 2006 for possession of narcotics (this charge is widely understood to be spurious) and was sentenced to three year imprisonment by the decision of the Grave Crimes Court. The are only five months left in his prison term.
