SON OF “TOLISHI SADO” NEWSPAPER’S EDITOR-IN-CHIEF SET FREE

Today, 7 October, in the Sabail District Court, under the chairmanship of Judge Rauf Ahmadov, a hearing was held on the criminal case of Emil Mammadov, the son of imprisoned "Tolishi Sado" (Voice of the Talish) Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Novruzali Mammadov.

The judge, claiming that there’s not enough evidence, issued a decision to set E. Mammadov free. E. Mammadov’s defense lawyer Hilal Mammadov told this to the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety.
The hearing was closed to media representatives.

E. Mammadov was detained on 16 June for allegedly holding narcotics in small amount. He was accused under article 234.1 (illegal possession of narcotics) of the Criminal Code.

"Tolishi Sado" (Voice of the Talish) Newspaper Editor-in-Chief, National Academy of Sciences' Department Head Novruzali Mammadov was arrested by the National Security Ministry on 2 February 2007 and then was sentenced to ten year of imprisonment.  N.Mammadov was accused under articles 274 (being a traitor) and 283 (inciting national, racial, and religious hatred). Therefore,  IRFS cannot rule out that E. Mammadov’s arrest was based on spurious charges.
