U.S. OFFICIALS APPEAL TO AZERBAIJAN’S LEADERSHIP

January 17th, 2009
According to “Azadlig” Newspaper, high-ranking government officials from the United States have appealed to the Azerbaijani government about restoring the broadcasts of "Radio Liberty", "Voice of America" and BBC via FM frequencies.

Commenting on this information, U.S. Embassy Public Relations Department Head Terry Davidson said that transferring the broadcasting of these radios from FM frequencies to internet, satellite, and shortwave frequencies restricts the populations’ ability to obtain information. “In Azerbaijan, internet and satellite are inaccessible and the quality of internet is not good,” said Davidson. “Therefore we find it important to return to the previous situation.”
With regards to Azerbaijan's Presidential Administration Socio-political Department Head Ali Hasanov’s statement that broadcasting foreign radio stations via different means is possible, Terry Davidson said briefly that the USA does not think this proposal is the solution to the problem.
Davidson refuted reports that Ambassador Anne Derse was called to Washington in connection with this issue. According to Davidson, Derse is on vacation and will be back to Baku next week.
